After reviewing hundreds of online mattresses over several years, I’ve learned that they’re all pretty similar. This makes your decision at home less risky, but our experience as testers is more lackluster. I can’t even recall how many beds I’ve tested with support coils, medium firmness and a neutral feel. It can get boring at times, that is, until a bed like Layla Hybrid arrives at your doorstep.
While most beds have only one main sleeping surface, this is a double-sided mattress. If you tire of sleeping on one side, you can flip it over and try the other. This versatility makes it a great fit for different sleepers and body types. According to a CNET survey, six out of 10 US adults are willing to invest in their sleep setup, which includes a mattress, so it is worth knowing if the Layla Hybrid is the right one for you. In this review, I’ll explain why I love this bed and cover who it’s best for.
First impressions of the Layla Hybrid
Once you order the Layla Hybrid mattress online, it’ll eventually arrive at your doorstep inside a tall cardboard box. It looks like it would hold something like an office water cooler or even a set of golf clubs, but trust me, it is indeed your new bed. To set it up, all you do is drag it inside, dump out the contents, rip off the plastic and watch the bed inflate on your foundation.
We found that our Layla Hybrid needed some more time after unboxing to expand, so we gave it a full night to sit out on our bed frame and get to its true form. That said, you can sleep on it right out of the box, but it might look and feel a little strange at first.
Upon my initial tests, I thought the Layla Hybrid felt a lot like the flagship Layla mattress, only a bit more supportive. It’s got a very similar memory foam feel and firmness level from side to side. Since this bed features support coils, I viewed it as an even more accommodating option for bigger body types. Most importantly, I thought it was super comfortable the moment I lay down.

Layla Hybrid mattress firmness and feel
What does the Layla Hybrid mattress feel like?
We’d describe the Layla Hybrid to have more of a fluffy, airy memory foam feel. When you press into either side and let go, you’ll see that the bed is slower to respond than a neutral option, but faster than something like a Tempur-Pedic bed. This offers sleepers a body-conforming quality that doesn’t make you feel like you’re stuck in the mattress.
This type of mattress is great to have if you enjoy having just a little bit of memory foam in your bed. It’s great for combination sleepers like myself since you want a slight sink-in sensation that adapts quickly to your body’s movements. Sometimes, it can be a bit difficult to move around on a dense memory foam bed since the top layers are so viscous. Luckily, Layla Hybrid presents sleepers with a memory foam feel that should work for a variety of preferences.
How firm is the Layla Hybrid mattress?
Since this is a flippable hybrid mattress, there’s actually a different firmness level on each side of the bed. The “Soft Side” provides the most amount of pressure relief for strict side sleepers as it’s around a proper medium-soft on our scale. If you flip the bed over to the “Firm Side,” it’s a bit firmer than a medium, making it the more supportive side for back, stomach and combination sleepers.
Having two firmnesses in one bed makes the Layla Hybrid a versatile mattress. If you happen not to like one side, you can just flip the bed over and try out the other. However, if you’re looking for a much firmer style of hybrid mattress, the Layla Hybrid might not be the best choice for you. Its “Firm Side” only gets up to about a medium, give or take — that said, the “Soft Side” is a side sleeper’s dream.
Out of 10, our Mattress Smasher 9000 gave the “Soft Side” of the Layla Hybrid a score of 3.1 and the “Firm Side” a 5.3. This very much reinforces what our team thought the bed’s firmness levels were from a subjective standpoint — all hail the mighty MS9K.
Layla Hybrid mattress construction
Being a double-sided bed, its construction differs from your average hybrid mattress. It’s 13 inches thick and composed of the following materials:
- In the middle of the bed, you’ve got a layer of pocketed coils, which provide the main support system for the mattress.
- Then, you’ve got a responsive transition layer on either side of those coils to act as a buffer between the support and comfort layers of the bed.
- Sandwiching everything on either side, you’ve got a copper-gel memory foam that gives the mattress its overall feel.
- Wrapping the bed is a dark gray cover. It’s soft to the touch and designed to be ultra-breathable. It even has some handles on the sides for easy lifting.
Layla Hybrid mattress performance
Motion isolation
This bed does deaden a noticeable amount of cross-mattress movement. The copper-gel memory foam absorbs lots of motion and doesn’t really allow much to transfer from side to side. This is especially the case for the “Soft Side” of the mattress, which has a thicker layer of this foam. Though the bed already has good motion isolation, it might be even more pronounced on the flagship Layla mattress since all-foam beds usually have greater motion isolation capabilities than hybrid ones. Still, the pocketed coils in the Layla Hybrid should isolate motion quite well for most couples.
Edge-to-edge support
We’d say that the Layla Hybrid has a very sturdy perimeter. This is mainly due to the coils extending all the way to the edges of the mattress. They keep you propped along the sides and don’t really give that much when you apply your full weight to the edges. Unlike motion isolation, hybrid beds generally perform better than all-foam ones when it comes to this category. If you or your partner like to really hug the edges of your bed at night, you should feel plenty of support on this particular mattress.
- Starting with the soft side, the top is made with a 2.5-inch layer of copper-gel memory foam for comfort and improved temperature regulation.
- A textured foam layer for airflow is added as a transition layer. It’s also zoned for more targeted support.
- In the center there’s a 6-inch pocketed innerspring system with double coils along the edges to improve edge support.
- The beginning of the firm side has a textured foam, similar to the soft side, for increased airflow.
- The top of the firm layer is made with a 1-inch copper-gel memory-foam layer that’s also found on the soft side of the mattress. It’s the main comfort material, but the firm side is slightly thinner to achieve a more supportive feel.
Temperature
Even though the cover on the Layla Hybrid is designed to be breathable and the copper-infused memory foam on either side is meant to help with cooling, we’d classify the Layla Hybrid as sleep temperature-neutral. We don’t anticipate this mattress to actively cool you down at night, nor excessively heat up. That may sound like a downside at first, but the good news is that most beds within the online space sleep around this temperature-neutral range. However, if you are looking for an active-cooling mattress, you can always check out our Best Cooling Mattress for Hot Sleepers list.
Durability
Being a more premium style of hybrid bed, the Layla Hybrid should be durable enough to last many years for all body types. The coils in the center of this bed are meant to withstand lots of night pressure, and in general, coils degrade far less than support foams do over time. If you or your partner are on the heavier side, you may benefit more from sleeping on an ultra-durable hybrid mattress. In that case, check out our Best Beds for Heavy People list.
Who is the Layla Hybrid mattress best for?
This is a super versatile mattress meant to accommodate a wide variety of sleeping preferences, but it still might be best for select groups of sleepers. Here’s who we think will love this bed the most.
Sleeping position
I think strict side sleepers will likely benefit the most from sleeping on this bed’s “Soft Side.” It provides an ample amount of sink-in, pressure relief for the areas of your body that really dig into a mattress, like your shoulders and hips. Along with having a soft profile, the memory foam on top will also help cradle side sleepers a bit more as they rest.
Combination sleepers who like to rotate between different sleeping positions will likely prefer the “Firm Side” the most. The thinner memory foam layer is responsive enough to adapt to your movements quickly while providing a nice balance of support and comfort. Unfortunately, if you’re a diehard back or stomach sleeper looking for a much firmer style of mattress, this is not the best choice for you. In that case, I’d look up the Essential by Layla. It’s around a proper medium-firm, but it’s not a flippable mattress like the others.
Body type
As mentioned, the construction of this bed makes it supportive enough to handle all body types, including heavier people. If you’re more petite or average-sized, you could also get by on the Layla Hybrid, but the level of support could also be overkill for you. In that case, you could save a bit more money by going with an all-foam bed.
I was pleasantly surprised by the price of the Layla Hybrid. It’s more durable than your average mattress because of its steel-coil construction and flippable capabilities, but it’s no more expensive than other high-quality memory-foam hybrid beds.
Layla Hybrid mattress pricing
undefined
Size | Measurements (inches) | Price |
---|---|---|
Twin | 38×75 inches | $1,299 |
Twin XL | 38×80 inches | $1,399 |
Full | 54×75 inches | $1,599 |
Queen | 60×80 inches | $1,699 |
King | 76×80 inches | $1,899 |
Cal King | 72×84 inches | $1,899 |
On the notion of saving money, this isn’t, in fact, the most budget-friendly option out there, but considering that you’re essentially getting two beds in one, I’d say it’s a nice bang for your buck. Plus, Layla is one of those brands that usually runs discounts on its beds year-round. After you apply one to the queen size, you can expect to pay right around $1,500 — not bad for a flippable hybrid bed.
Trial, shipping and warranty
Layla backs all of its beds with a generous policy set. Its beds ship to you in a box for free, and once it’s in your possession, you get a 120-night trial period to try it at home risk-free. If you happen not to like it within that time frame, you can return it for free. On the other hand, if you decide to keep it, you’re backed by a lifetime warranty. That’s above and beyond the usual standard for an online mattress warranty.
How does Layla Hybrid compare to other mattresses?
Layla Hybrid vs. Layla Mattress
There are some noticeable differences between the two flippable beds from Layla. The flagship Layla bed is more affordable than the Layla Hybrid, which is designed to be more premium. Since the Layla Hybrid has support coils, it will be the better option for handling heavier people, while the all-foam design of the Layla mattress is most suitable for supporting medium to petite-sized individuals. The “Firm Side” of the flagship Layla mattress is also a bit firmer than that of the Layla Hybrid’s. This makes the Layla mattress slightly more accommodating for primary back and stomach sleepers.
Layla Hybrid vs. Plank Firm Luxe
These are two popular double-sided mattresses available online nowadays, but there are several differences between the two. First, both have completely separate feels. The Plank Firm Luxe has more of a neutral hybrid feel compared to the Layla Hybrid, which features an airy memory foam sensation. The Plank Firm Luxe is also a hybrid mattress that’s specifically designed to be on the firmer side. It’s less accommodating for side sleepers, catering to the support needs of primary back and stomach sleepers. If you’re looking for a more affordable choice, the Plank Firm Luxe also has that going for it, but you are backed by better policies with the Layla Hybrid.
The final verdict
When it comes to flippable beds, this is honestly one of my favorite choices. I think the Layla Hybrid is definitely worth your consideration if you’re in the market for a double-sided mattress with an airy memory foam feel that’s backed by great policies. Also, if you don’t mind spending up for something a bit more premium, I think you’ll get a lot out of this bed in the long run — especially if you dig memory foam and you’re on the heavier side.
You might like the Layla Hybrid mattress if:
- You want a supportive hybrid mattress
- You want a responsive memory foam feel
- You want a flippable bed with two different firmnesses
- You don’t mind spending up for a nice value
You might not like this mattress if:
- You’re looking for a super budget-friendly bed
- You prefer the feel of a dense memory foam mattress
- You’re searching for a much firmer mattress
- You want an all-foam mattress
This bed is a whopping 13 inches thick, which is a bit thicker than your standard hybrid mattress available online. I often recommend investing in deep pocket sheets if your bed is over 15 inches thick. Luckily, you should be able to use a normal sheet set on the Layla Hybrid. Sadly, though, you’ll obviously have to rearrange your sheets if you want to sleep on the other side — it’s a cruel world we live in.
Generally, I’d say so. Having personally tested Layla products for the past six and half years, I think they make high-quality stuff. For years, I actually slept exclusively with one of the Layla Kapok Pillows. I highly recommend those if you like a shredded memory foam pillow. I highly doubt Layla as a brand back its beds with such generous policies if they weren’t so quality and trusted.
Modern-day hybrid beds are intentionally designed to not sag excessively over time. On a more old-school, traditional innerspring mattress, the sleeping surface could start to bow towards the middle, but only after prolonged use — I’m talking 15-20 years here. With beds like the Layla Hybrid, I can’t see an option like this overly sagging any time soon, especially considering its more premium and durable design.
